Yachting : Royal Huisman begins construction on 46m sailing yacht Project 405
Also known as Reichel/Pugh-Nauta 151, the versatile sailing yacht was commissioned
Royal Huisman has begun construction on its 46 metre high-performance cruiser sloop yacht Project 405.
Construction on the yacht began earlier this month after the yard created a full-scale mock-up of the 46m yacht’s aft main deck.
Also known as Reichel/Pugh-Nauta 151, the versatile sailing yacht was commissioned by “very experienced” owners.
The owners stipulated a desire to explore the world in a comfortable yacht lightweight enough to make it a serious superyacht regatta contender. As a result, the yacht will be built from lightweight aluminium and carbon composite.
After commissioning the yacht via video conferencing and telephone calls, the owners are taking a hands-on role in the design and build of their yacht. They have consequently appointed their own project team consisting of MCM Newport’s Nigel Ingram and a professional race team.
Nauta Design
Nauta Design is responsible for the concept and has penned the yacht inside and out while Reichel/Pugh is responsible for the yacht’s naval architecture. Rondal will provide the yacht’s carbon Panamax rig.
Accommodation on board is for a total of eight to ten guests, as well as a crew of eight. Delivery is scheduled for 2022.
Speaking about the start of construction, Royal Huisman chief executive Jan Timmerman said: “In spite of Covid-19 restrictions, work on all aspects of Project 405 continues as planned.
Inhouse craftsmen
The full project team, designers, architects, our engineers are on schedule – mostly working remotely from home – so the development of the design and systems continues while our inhouse craftsmen have made a start with the production.”
He added: “At this moment we are looking forward to the next milestone: the hull turning at Royal Huisman’s headquarters in Vollenhove.”
