CEO of Eni says Italy to be “fully independent” of Russian gas within 2 and half years

In two and a half years, and therefore in the winter of 2024-2025, “we will be completely independent of Russian gas”, said Eni’s CEO, Claudio Descalzi.
Speaking on the sidelines of the “World Energy Transition” Conference in Rome, Descalzi said “Politically, the gas ceiling is very far away but the insistence of – Italian PM Mario- Draghi and – Minister of Ecological Transition Roberto- Cingolani made it enter the European agenda for the first time”, calling it “an important step”.
“Not everyone agrees but we are a community and sooner or later we will have to find a sense of community”, the CEO of Eni went on to say.
According to Descalzi, it is necessary to anticipate the risk of a possible gas rationing next winter, due to possible shortages in supplies from Russia, and for this reason “we must have a gas price that allows us to fill the storage facilities”.
As for the possibility for the country to reduce gas consumption, Descalzi recalled that “unfortunately, ours is a system that runs on gas and therefore there are priorities at the national security level”.
“I think that instead of waiting and playing for the throw-in we should be proactive so as not to find ourselves having to look for solutions that leave someone aside,” he added.
Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi received the 2022 Distinguished Business Leadership Award from the Atlantic Council.
This prestigious honour was awarded for the “extraordinary role” he has assumed in the energy sector at an international level, for the technological transformation of the company aimed at complete decarbonization by 2050, and for his contribution to the new challenge of Italian and European energy security
This is the first time that an Italian representative has been honoured in the Business Leadership category
