A Chinese fishing vessel was attacked whilst operating in the offshore Equatorial Guinea Mbini area. There were 6 crew members confirmed kidnapped. Whilst Equatorial Guinea has historically seen fewer piratical events than its Gulf of Guinea neighbors, this is the third offshore attack in December 2021. Whilst pirates are targeting opportunistic vessels, they are assessed to have the capability and intent to target larger commercial vessels underway. The success of its recent incidents off the coast of Equatorial guinea is establishing an increased incident volume in this region.
