Grounded offshore platform recognized as a total loss

Offshore support platform DONG JI NO 2 undertow of Korean tug JAEWON 9 broke off towing the line on Dec 12 between Wangan and Penghu islands, Penghu Islands, Taiwan, Taiwan Strait, in rough weather. Platform drifted ashore on the eastern coast of Jiangnao island, eastern Wangan, early Dec 13. The platform was towed from Hong Kong to Korea.

After refloating attempts hampered by unfavorable weather, a platform was recognized as a total loss, because of damages it sustained, including numerous hull breaches. Fuel on board was removed, though there are some residuals left. The owner of the platform is required to remove the wreckage, as required by regulations. jawan 9 left the accident site on Dec 15, heading for Korea. The contracted salvage company is responsible for equipment salvage and probably, for wreck removal.

Pusher Tug JAEWON 9 is currently located at CHINA – East China Sea at position 28° 05′ 48.2″ N, 121° 46′ 00.8″ E as reported by MarineTraffic Terrestrial Automatic Identification System on 2021-12-17 14:25 UTC (2 days, 4 hours ago)

The vessel departed from BUSAN, KR on 2021-12-01 13:15 LT (UTC +9) and is currently sailing at 5.6 knots with East direction

jawan 9 (IMO: 8806228) is a Pusher Tug that was built in 1988 (33 years ago) and is sailing under the flag of Korea.
Its carrying capacity is 285 t DWT and her current draught is reported to be 4.5 meters. Her length overall (LOA) is 38.8 meters and her width is 11 meters.
