MAN, Stena Teknik and Proman sign MoU to retrofit MAN 48/60 engines

The retrofitting will enable engines to perform dual-fuel, diesel and methanol operations.

MAN Energy Solutions has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Proman and Stena Teknik to retrofit MAN 48/60 engines.

As part of the agreement, the three companies will work together to make MAN 48/60 engines capable of performing dual-fuel, diesel and methanol operations.

The agreement was signed by PrimeServ Germany head Stefan Eefting and Retrofit and Upgrades head Bernd Siebert on behalf of MAN Energy Solutions and Stena’s technical director Ron Gerlach, while Proman was represented by Marine Fuels director Peter Schild.

The latest agreement builds upon an existing partnership for the development of a methanol retrofit and fuel-supply solution that was started last October between Stena and Proman.

Eefting said: “MAN Energy Solutions is happy to work with industry partners on decarbonising marine segment, a sentiment that Stena and Proman happily share.

“Methanol has great potential as a future fuel and is clean, efficient and safe to work with.

“It offers significant greenhouse-gas reductions and is even net-zero when produced from renewable energy sources.”

The companies will commence the associated work with an initial feasibility study, which will help to determine respective responsibilities, division of work, and scope and limits of the project.

The primary study will investigate methanol combustion on the basis of the Otto combustion principle as well as methanol port fuel injection, due to the inherent advantages this offers for conventional installations.

At this stage, the developments in methanol technology for newbuilds and its potential for future retrofits may also be considered.

Following the successful culmination of a feasibility study, the project will move to a second phase, which would include engine retrofitting, commissioning and field testing.

The project’s third and last phase would involve completion of field testing and delivery of the engine for commercial operations.
