The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP), through the General Directorate of Seafarers (DGGM), began the program called “My First Maritime Work Experience”, which is inspired by the project that recently became Law 121 of December 30, 2019, “Learn by Doing” (Aprender Haciendo) which is being carried out by the Government of President Nito Cortizo.
“The purpose is to provide young professionals in the maritime sector, the opportunity to obtain their first work experience to learn first-hand, about the different services that the AMP provides, both nationally and internationally”, said The Minister of Maritime Affairs, Noriel Arauz, during a simple but emotional act welcoming the participants
The AMP, added Minister Arauz, on this occasion relies on the General Directorate of Seafarers team, to give back to society some of their professional knowledge acquired in their offices and help to train the new generation, within a secured environment, but above all with the experience offered by exercising the day-to-day work in this very competitive sector.
The Minister of Labour (MITRADEL), Mrs Doris Zapata during her speech said “I am extremely pleased that a government institution such as the AMP has had the initiative to provide young professionals with a first work experience from an institution that belongs to the maritime sector, the service sector, logistics , which is a field that continues to gain space, demonstrating that we can be competitive. It is definitely a valuable consideration since these are the initiatives that the country needs.”
“For the Seafarers General Directorate, it is a responsibility and commitment to Panama, to contribute to these types of projects, we are convinced that knowledge is a tool for development and transformation, that is why it is so valuable to support proposals that provide our young people with a tool that will serve them not only in their professional career, but in their lives, ”added DGGM Director Captain Juan Maltez.
This first recruitment was carried out through the Panamanian Association of Merchant Navy Officers (APOM) and the Maritime University of Panama (UMIP) who put forward the candidates; eight (8) ladies and twelve (12) gentlemen, who come from the maritime sector, careers like Nautical Sciences, Naval Construction and Maritime Administration, among others. The apprentices will receive a salary for six (6) months and will go through a training period and then will practice his new skills during the remining period. During the process they will be accompanied and supervised by the specialized staff.
In addition to Shipping Minister Araúz and Labour Minister Zapata, the welcome ceremony was attended by the Rector of the UMIP, Mr. Victor Luna Barahona, the President of APOM, Captain Clemente Forero, the Director General and the Deputy Director of the Directorate General of the Seafarers (DGGM), Captain, Juan Maltez and Ing. Isabel Valencia, respectively, the 20 professionals who will start the project, media and other special guests.
