ABS : Requirements for Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage

The increased commitment from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping is expected to drive changes in design and operations of oceangoing vessels.

Onboard carbon capture and storage systems (OCCS) are expected to support the global energy transition by reducing carbon emissions produced by fuel combustion.

ABS Requirements for Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage, provide an outline of the Classification criteria for the arrangements, construction, installation, and survey of equipment and systems for marine and offshore assets with installed post-combustion OCCS equipment.

The requirements have been developed to address risks to the crew and the environment in the adoption of these technologies on board ships.

The ABS requirements also include an optional notation for vessels based on their readiness level to install a future OCCS.
