The Seacombe Ferry Terminal refurbishment project has achieved a milestone with the installation of new passenger linkspan bridges at the landing stage.

Under the project, the current 130-year-old linkspan bridges, which had reached the end of their operational life, have been replaced.

The refurbished landing stage features improved mooring bollards and new, powered gangways.

The work was completed in four days.

Installation of the new north and south linkspan bridges, and refurbishments to the north and south booms were carried out using a specialist Lara 1 Crane Ship.

This ship was brought up the river from Garston using a barge.

The project is expected to keep services running at Seacombe for several more years.

After completion, the landing stage will be able to function for an additional 25 years before needing any further major maintenance.

As the terminal refurbishment continues, Seacombe Ferry Terminal will remain shut until spring 2022.

Liverpool City Region Combined Authority transport and air quality portfolio holder councillor Liam Robinson said: “The installation of these new linkspan bridges marks a major milestone in this significant investment at Seacombe Ferry Terminal by the Combined Authority.

“We’re hugely grateful to our loyal Mersey Ferries customers and their patience while these works are being carried out and look forward to welcoming them back to Seacombe in the new year.

“The Mersey Ferries are an important part of our cultural identity in the city region and these works will make sure that they continue to run from Seacombe for many years to come.”

Owned and operated by Merseytravel, Mersey Ferries serves as the executive body providing strategic and operational transport advice to the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.

It also provides cruises, including the River Explorer cruise, which departs from Pier Head and calls at Wirral terminals, Seacombe and Woodside over almost one hour.
