Shipping Italy : Terminal operators are leading the recovery of the Genoese maritime-port economy

With reference to the transport and logistics of goods, compared to the first part of 2021, the turnover of port terminal operators increased by 20.3% in terms of turnover to Italian customers and by 12.9% to foreign ones. Prices are indicated up by 6.3%, gross margins are booming and employment grows by 1.2%. Shipping Italy reported
On the contrary, the increases among logistics and transport companies are moderate: + 0.6% for the national component of turnover, + 1.1% for the foreign component, gross margins up 2%, and the expansion of the workforce is limited to a + 0.4%.
With reference to the port of Genoa, from January to May there was an increase in total freight traffic in tonnage equal to + 6.9% compared to the same period of 2021. Conventional traffic and containers increased in tonnage respectively by 5, 1%, and 6.2%. Solid bulk goods grew by 11.9%, and liquid ones by 12.9% thanks to the strong recovery in the traffic of vegetable oils and wine (+ 45.3%).
The slowdown in industrial production, on the other hand, is reflected in the data on the industrial function of the port, with steel traffic down by 4.4%. In terms of TEU container traffic is in decline, recording a -1.5%.
As regards the movement of passengers, people transported by ferries and cruises have gone from just over 203,000 to over 460,000 compared to the first five months of 2021.
The gap with the pre-Covid period remains wide: passengers transported are still overall lower by 39% (ferries -12.3% and cruises -58.8%).
Finally, as regards production in the shipbuilding industry, according to Confindustria Genoa data, naval engineering appears particularly resilient (+ 4.5% in the half-year) although orders in the first six months of 2022 are down, both from Italy and from ‘abroad.
