IMO : Secretary-General Appoints Annalisse Sly of Australia as Member of the WMU Board of Governors
The World Maritime University (WMU) is pleased to announce that Ms Annalisse Sly, Alternate Permanent Representative of Australia to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), has been appointed by the IMO Secretary-General to join the WMU Board of Governors.
Prior to her appointment as Alternate Permanent Representative of Australia to the IMO in December 2019, Ms Sly held the role of Policy and Regulatory Senior Advisor, Environment Standards, in the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and was responsible for developing, implementing and interpreting international conventions, government policy and legislation, to achieve a reduction in the incidence and effect of ship sourced marine pollution and other adverse environmental effects from shipping activities.
She has been active in the IMO for over a decade where she has formed part of the Australian delegation for a number of IMO Committee and Sub-Committee meetings and Chaired the Working Group on Marine Plastic Litter, established by the Marine Environment Protection Committee.
Ms Sly has also been active in the IMO’s Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme, undertaking engagement in the Asia-Pacific region on environmental shipping issues. Prior to joining AMSA in November 2011, she worked in policy development for the prevention and management of marine pest incursions for the Australian Government.
The University is particularly delighted to welcome Ms Sly, as the Government of Australia has been a very important supporter of the University’s mission. Through AMSA, ten Fellowships for students from the Pacific region from 2018 to 2020 were made available, with a second tranche, again of ten Fellowships for 2021-2023, having just been announced. The Australian Fellows have made a very significant contribution to the home country’s maritime and oceans sector after returning home.
Regarding her appointment, Ms. Sly said, “I am honoured to join such a distinguished group of colleagues on the WMU Board of Governors. I had the pleasure of attending the WMU in Malmo in 2013 for a short Train the Trainer Workshop on Energy Efficient Operation of Ships.
I was extremely impressed by WMU’s standard of education and facilities and it remains an experience I remember fondly. I have had the privilege of keeping abreast of WMU’s work through my involvement with the IMO, as well as my work with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, and I look forward to contributing to WMU’s future ambition and objectives as a member of the Board of Governors.”

About the WMU Board of Governors
In accordance with the Charter, WMU’s governance structure consists of a Board of Governors (BoG) and an Executive Board (EB). The IMO Secretary-General is the WMU ex-officio Chancellor. The President directs and administers the University. The BoG meets once a year and is responsible for exercising due governance of the University, ensuring the effectiveness and continuity of its operations, protecting the autonomous nature of the University within the framework of the IMO, and ensuring the maintenance of the highest academic and professional standards. The BoG is composed of up to 30 members who are appointed by the IMO Secretary-General for a renewable period of three years. The BoG meets annually and is chaired by the Chancellor. The reports approved by the BoG are submitted to the IMO Council.
