WMU : Open Seminar – Can a Regulation be Assessed Against Performance in Shipping
The World Maritime University (WMU) delivered an open seminar entitled, “Can a Regulation be Assessed Against Performance in Shipping?” Featuring prominent guest speakers, the seminar presented the role that industry good practice(s) can play in achieving good performance of the shipping sector and that not everything needs to be regulated. The seminar was organized for the WMU Class of 2022 MSc students as part of their course on the IMO System of Maritime Governance and was open for the general public to attend online.
The seminar was opened by WMU’s Vice-President (Academic Affairs), Professor Jens-Uwe Schröder-Hinrichs, who was delighted that after many months of online teaching, WMU is once again able to provide for in-person interaction between students and experts in the field. He also expressed his gratitude to the supporters of the seminar – InterManager, the Nautical Institute, and BIMCO, remarking that the University is fortunate to have such strong links with the maritime industry. The event was moderated by resident Faculty, Professor George Theocharidis. Guest speakers included Captain Kuba Szymanski, Secretary-General of InterManager, Mr. David Patraiko, Director of Projects for The Nautical Institute, and Mr. Peter Lundahl Rasmussen, Head of Maritime Information for BIMCO.
Each of the speakers addressed how good practice(s) help achieve good performance in the shipping industry in relation to safety, environment protection, or commercially. All presentations were delivered in light of the thematic question, whether a regulation could be assessed against performance in relation to best practices, and each speaker provided their own perspective. The seminar concluded with a lively debate between the speakers and the participants, including those attending virtually.
The Malmö MSc in Maritime Affairs is a 14-month programme with seven specializations: Maritime Education & Training; Maritime Energy Management; Maritime Law & Policy; Maritime Safety & Environmental Administration; Ocean Sustainability, Governance and Management; Port Management, and Shipping Management & Logistics. Foundation studies are taught in the first term and cover the introductory knowledge that is fundamental to all activities in the maritime field. Three successive terms focus on specialization studies and a dissertation. WMU has more than 150 Visiting Professors and Guest Lecturers from around the world who contribute their expertise to enrich the education of WMU students.
