Lighter collided with bulk carrier, sank, 3 missing

A lighter ship identified as, FARDIN-1, loaded with some 600 tons of coal sank in Mongla port, Bangladesh, after she collided with, according to local news sources, bulk carrier HANDY PERTH, in the evening of Nov 15. Three out of six crew of lighter ship went missing. The lighter ship completed coal loading from berthed German freighter and was underway, HANDY PERTH was also underway, maneuvering to leave the port. It was said, that the lighter ship simply didn’t notice moving HANDY PERTH, and moved right to HANDY PERTH bow.

HANDY PERTH left Mongla shortly after the accident, sailed downstream, and anchored in the Bay of Bengal off the Kunga river mouth. As of morning Nov 16, she was in the same area either anchored or already underway, status “For Order”, probably waiting for investigation results.

It’s carrying capacity is 35177 t DWT and her current draught is reported to be 6.2 meters. Her length overall (LOA) is 180 meters and her width is 30 meters
