Port of Dover Promotes Maritime Careers and Spotlights Future Port Leaders for Maritime UK Week 2022
This week, the Port of Dover is undertaking an ambitious programme of community engagement, including several visits by local pupils and an array of digital content.
Today, pupils from a local primary school are visiting the Port as part of their project on Dover Harbour. During their visit, the school pupils will learn about the rich history of the Harbour Board, the unique geography of the Port and how it has contributed to the economy over hundreds of years.
On Tuesday this week, travel and tourism sixth-form students will visit Dover’s cruise terminal for a tour and also go aboard Saga’s Spirit of Discovery.
This vessel was Saga’s first purpose-built ocean cruise ship and was christened at the Port of Dover in 2019 and will provide a fantastic opportunity for the students to learn about the industry first-hand.
On Wednesday and Friday of this week, Port’s apprentices will tour Dover’s state-of-the-art cargo terminal to learn more about this thriving branch of the operation, learn about the logistical challenges of the cargo business and understand its place in the wider supply chain.
Furthermore, every day this week, the Port of Dover will be sharing a profile on one of its apprentices, work placement students or graduate scheme employees on our website and social media, to demonstrate the huge variety of job roles on offer and illustrate what Dover colleagues love about the ports industry.

With so many opportunities on offer at the Port, the Port of Dover is also contributing to Dover District Council’s ‘Big Dover Jobs & Skills Fair’ on Tuesday 18th October.
The Port of Dover is the UK’s busiest international ferry port, handling more lorries than all other UK ports put together through an unrivalled and fluid operation capable of facilitating 120 ferry movements and 110 miles of freight per day. £144bn worth of UK trade and 33% of all trade with the EU is handled by the Port of Dover.
Dover is also the UK’s second busiest cruise port, has a marina and property business primed to benefit from a new waterfront and a busy cargo business handling fresh produce, containers, project cargo, general cargo and grain operating from a state-of-the-art terminal.
