The fire occurred at 12.29 when Stena Scandica was on route from Port of Norvik in Sweden to Port of Ventspils in Latvia, carrying 241 passengers and 58 crew. The fire was located to a truck’s cooling container on the car deck and the crew could put it out using the extinguishing system onboard.
“We can confirm that the fire is extinguished, and we have no injuries reported. All passengers have been cared for and they are currently in an allocated area. The safety and well-being of them and our crew is our main priority”, says Stefan Elfström, PR Manager at Stena Line.
Due to the incident, Stena Scandica has lost power. The crew, supported by the company, is working to restore onboard systems at this time. The vessel’s emergency power generator is active and the vessel will remain safe in its present location. There is no need to evacuate at this moment.
Swedish Maritime Administration has been informed and we have their full support. A tugboat is on its way to support the vessel back to Sweden. Destination Gotland has been put on standby for further support if needed, and their vessel M/S Visby is located close to the Stena Scandica.
The vessel is expected to arrive back at Nynäshamn, Sweden early tomorrow morning. The company will ensure there are people in place to make sure both passengers and crew receive all the help and support needed on the vessel’s arrival.
