Everett Ship Repair LLC (ESR), based in Everett, Washington, has announced the successful acquisition of the floating dry dock Hercules.
The massive structure, formerly operating in San Diego as the NASSCO Builder, was towed north by Baydelta’s tug Delta Deanna—a vessel built by ESR’s sister company, Nichols Brothers Boat Builders. With its arrival, Hercules becomes the largest dry dock in Puget Sound, marking a significant milestone in ESR’s mission to expand ship repair capacity for both commercial and government vessels along the West Coast.
A New Benchmark for Ship Repair in Puget Sound
The Hercules dramatically increases ESR’s operational capabilities. With a lifting capacity of 35,000 long tons, an inside beam of 135 feet, and a length of 820 feet, the dry dock will allow the company to service some of the largest ships operating on the West Coast.
“This is more than an investment in our company—it’s an investment in the region’s maritime infrastructure,” said Gavin Higgins, CEO of ESR. “Having the Hercules here in Everett strengthens our ability to support the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, Washington State Ferries, and a wide variety of commercial operators. It also contributes to the nation’s readiness in the Indo-Pacific theater.”
Complementing a Growing Fleet of Dry Docks
The Hercules joins ESR’s two existing floating dry docks—the Faithful Servant (7,500 LT) and the Emerald Lifter (1,800 LT). Together, the trio provides ESR with unmatched flexibility in serving vessels of different sizes. Following the recertification of its crane and commissioning of onboard systems, the Hercules is expected to begin full operations in October.
Economic and Workforce Growth
The arrival of the Hercules is also expected to create new jobs in the Pacific Northwest. ESR anticipates significant growth in its skilled workforce, employing welders, pipefitters, electricians, machinists, and other maritime professionals. These family-wage jobs will support both the shipyard’s long-term expansion and the economic vitality of the local community.
“We are proud to continue the legacy of the Hercules,” added Jon Shaton, general manager of ESR. “This dry dock has already served the industry well, and under ESR’s ownership, it will remain a vital asset to keep ships safe, reliable, and mission-ready for years to come.”
With this acquisition, Everett Ship Repair strengthens its role as a cornerstone of the Pacific Northwest’s maritime industry—investing in infrastructure, people, and capabilities that ensure the region remains a hub for ship repair and maintenance.
