In a move that further solidifies its footprint in the Baltic Sea and reinforces its commitment to sustainable maritime transport, Sweden’s Stena Line has announced the acquisition of Wasaline, the world’s northernmost shipping company. The deal marks a major strategic step for Stena Line as it takes over operations of the vital Umeå–Vaasa freight and passenger ferry route, a cross-border link that has become a lifeline for trade, travel, and regional cooperation between Sweden and Finland.
The acquisition involves Stena Line’s purchase of NLC Ferry, the company currently operating Wasaline. NLC Ferry is jointly owned by the cities of Umeå (Sweden) and Vaasa (Finland) through their 50/50 partnership in Kvarken Link. Under the terms of the agreement, Stena Line will assume operational control of Wasaline, while Kvarken Link will retain ownership of the Aurora Botnia, the vessel that exclusively serves the Umeå–Vaasa route.
A Strategic Step for Regional Growth
“This is a strategically important step to ensure that the service between Vaasa and Umeå not only continues but also has the potential to grow in the years ahead,” said Peter Ståhlberg, CEO of Wasaline. “We are looking forward to developing our work on environmental and operational efficiency in close collaboration with Stena Line. Wasaline’s staff, both onshore and onboard, will continue to deliver the same high-quality service that our passengers and freight customers expect. This transition will bring significant positive synergies for the entire Kvarken region.”
The acquisition builds upon a series of initiatives that have positioned Wasaline as a pioneer in sustainable shipping. In July 2025, the company signed a biogas supply agreement with Gasum and entered a FuelEU Maritime pooling arrangement with Stena Line, creating the first international green shipping corridor on the Umeå–Vaasa route.
Strengthening Stena Line’s Green and Regional Leadership
With this acquisition, Stena Line expands both its geographical and environmental reach. “By bringing Wasaline into the Stena Line family, we gain a vessel that embodies the latest in environmental technology and can sail CO₂-neutral on a regular basis,” said Niclas Mårtensson, CEO of Stena Line. “We are also enhancing our access to alternative fuels, which will be key to our long-term sustainability strategy. In addition, the Umeå–Vaasa connection gives us a powerful new intermodal transport link toward Gothenburg and Trelleborg, opening direct gateways to continental Europe.”
Stena Line is already recognized as a leader in sustainable ferry operations, continuously investing in green technology, hybrid propulsion systems, and fuel innovation. The Aurora Botnia, Wasaline’s flagship, aligns perfectly with Stena’s mission to reduce maritime emissions and improve operational efficiency across its fleet.
A Milestone for Umeå and Vaasa
For the cities of Umeå and Vaasa, this transition marks the culmination of more than a decade of cooperation and investment aimed at preserving and modernizing the historic Kvarken route.
“Together with the City of Vaasa, we have demonstrated that this connection is not only essential but also profitable,” said Hans Lindberg, Chair of the Municipal Executive Board of Umeå Municipality. “This achievement comes at a time when regional infrastructure, civil defense, and preparedness have become increasingly important. For Umeå, partnering with a global operator like Stena Line is a forward-looking decision that strengthens our regional resilience and long-term opportunities.”
Frans Villanen, Chair of the City Council of Vaasa, echoed this sentiment: “We are very proud of the courage shown by both cities when we decided that maintaining the Kvarken ferry connection was vital. Thanks to the vision and hard work of CEO Peter Ståhlberg and the entire Wasaline team, the route has seen continuous growth in both passenger numbers and freight volumes. Now, it is time for a larger, more experienced operator to take the reins. Stena Line’s expertise and resources will ensure that the route continues to thrive and develop in line with the region’s ambitions.”
Next Steps and Regulatory Approvals
The acquisition remains subject to approval by the municipal councils of Umeå and Vaasa, which are expected to vote on the matter in November 2025. The deal is also contingent upon standard closing conditions, including regulatory and authority approvals. If all goes according to plan, the transaction will be finalized in early 2026.
Expanding Stena Line’s Baltic Network
Stena Line is already one of Europe’s leading ferry operators, with 20 routes connecting ports across the continent. In the Baltic Sea region, the company operates established ferry lines between Trelleborg–Rostock, Karlskrona–Gdynia, Ventspils–Nynäshamn, and Travemünde–Liepaja. The addition of the Umeå–Vaasa route will mark its fifth line in the Baltic, further consolidating Stena Line’s position as a dominant player in northern European ferry transport.
Beyond its routes, Stena Line also manages several strategic ports and terminals across the region, integrating sea transport with rail and road networks to support efficient freight movement across the Nordic countries and the wider European continent.
A Symbol of Nordic Maritime Innovation
The Umeå–Vaasa route is more than just a transport corridor—it is a symbol of Nordic cooperation, sustainability, and resilience. Through its advanced vessel technology and commitment to carbon neutrality, Wasaline has become a model for future-oriented ferry operations. Now, with Stena Line’s global network, resources, and innovation capacity, the route is poised for a new era of growth and green transformation.
For both Sweden and Finland, the acquisition represents not an ending, but a continuation of a shared maritime legacy—one that connects communities, boosts regional economies, and drives forward the vision of a cleaner, more connected Baltic Sea.
