Houston-based Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (NASDAQ: GLDD) has announced the delivery of its newest Jones Act-compliant trailing suction hopper dredge (TSHD), the Amelia Island, from Conrad Shipyard in Morgan City, Louisiana.
The addition of the Amelia Island marks another step forward in the company’s fleet modernization and diversification strategy. Designed for safe and efficient operations in shallow and narrow waterways, the dredge is capable of working across all U.S. coastlines. The vessel measures approximately 346 feet in length, 69 feet in breadth, and 23 feet in depth, and is powered by 16,500 total horsepower.
Equipped with two 800 mm trailing suction pipes, the dredge can operate at depths of up to 100 feet and has a hopper capacity of 6,330 cubic yards. Its main engines and generators are EPA Tier IV compliant, ensuring reduced emissions and environmental sustainability. These advanced features make the vessel well suited for projects along U.S. ports, channels, coasts, and major infrastructure developments.
Commenting on the milestone, Lasse Petterson, president and CEO of GLDD, said:
“The delivery of the Amelia Island, our sixth hopper dredge, represents the successful completion of our newbuild program, giving us the largest and most modern hopper dredge fleet in the United States. With its high degree of automation, this vessel is built for a wide range of operations, including beach renourishment, coastal protection, channel deepening, and maintenance dredging. With a full project schedule for 2025 and 2026, the dredge will begin work immediately.”
The Amelia Island joins its sister ship, the Galveston Island, strengthening GLDD’s partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and underscoring the company’s long-term commitment to advancing the U.S. dredging industry.
