Hines Furlong Line, based in Paducah, Ky., has strengthened its inland river fleet with the addition of the M/V Sun Valley, a 76-foot, 9-inch towboat designed for durability, crew comfort, and operational efficiency. The vessel was constructed by Eymard Marine Construction & Repair Inc. in New Orleans, La.

Propulsion and Performance

The engineroom is equipped with twin Mitsubishi 6R6 engines, each producing 800 hp at 1,400 rpm. These engines are paired with Reintjes WAF 570 gears (5.38:1 ratio) driving HS 72- by 64-inch four-blade propellers, ensuring strong and reliable propulsion. The towboat also features two Patterson 40-ton deck winches mounted on stainless steel deck doublers to enhance towing performance.

The vessel has a depth of 9 feet, 6 inches, and a fuel capacity of 16,500 gallons, along with storage for 480 gallons of lube oil, plus separate tanks for bilge, dirty oil, and clean gear oil. Designed to support long missions, the Sun Valley provides full accommodations for six crew members and offers an eye level of 29 feet.

Stainless Steel Features

One of the defining characteristics of the Sun Valley is its extensive use of stainless steel, which enhances durability and minimizes maintenance. Stainless components include fire and potable water piping, exterior drains, hatches, deck vents, sounding tubes, exterior doors, cooler boxes, showers, and fendering attachments. Additional stainless elements cover the bow H-bit, chalks and buttons, winch runners, handrails, freeing ports, face wire guards, exhaust tips, vessel nameplate, and fueling station.

Crew Comfort and Interior Design

The interior was designed with a focus on long-term crew comfort. Insulation combines Mascoat insulating paint with foil-backed mineral wool, while finishes include marlite paneling, FRP, epoxy flooring, quartz countertops, and premium-grade hardware. The result is a clean, modern interior tailored to withstand heavy use while maintaining comfort.

Looking Ahead

Kent Furlong, president of Hines Furlong Line, praised Eymard Marine for its craftsmanship:

“Eymard crafts exceptional vessels, combining quality workmanship with a personal touch that makes working with the Eymard family a true pleasure.”

The Sun Valley is the first in a six-vessel series, with additional towboats scheduled for delivery — the next set to arrive in October 2025. All vessels in the series will also be offered for bareboat charter.

With its robust propulsion system, stainless-steel outfitting, and modern living spaces, the M/V Sun Valley is well-positioned to deliver reliable performance across the inland waterways as the latest member of the Hines Furlong Line fleet.
